Abstract

Present paper is concentrated on the effect of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia coated with its piston crown on the performance and emission characteristics of diesel engine. The piston crown top surface were fully coated with 7% YSZ  with thickness of 0.25 mm and in the bond coat NiCrAlY were used with a thickness of 0.05 mm which is deposited on the target surface using plasma spray technique. Present analysis is carried out in a four stroke single cylinder diesel engine with diesel fuel, Mahua and jatropha biodiesel under different loading conditions. Results of this study reveal that the brake thermal efficiency of a 7% YSZ  coated engine with diesel as a fuel is increased by 10.4% along with decrease of brake specific fuel consumption of a 7% YSZ  by 13.1%. In coated engines the Hydro carbon (HC) emissions and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions was reduced by 13.1% and 16.1% but the Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission was marginally increased by 18.87%.
