Abstract

We present a pedagogical overview, accessible to university students of physics, of the intriguing topic of diamagnetism. The treatment touches upon some basic issues of classical electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, thermodynmics and statistical mechanics. The specific role of the boundary in determining diamagnetism, even in the so-called thermodynamic limit, is underscored.
