Abstract

Observations and modeling of terrestrial water cycle is important for sustainable management of water resources as well as
understanding the impact of climate change. Satellites provide an important role in measurements of various dimensions of
water cycle components in spatio-temporal domain. Paper reviews the scientific basis and techniques of retrieval of various
hydro-meteorological parameters (Rainfall, Soil Moisture, Evapo-transpiration, Groundwater, Water level, Surface Runoff,
conjunctive water utilization and Water quality etc.) which are estimated using advanced satellite based instruments
(Altimeter, Radar, Optical and Microwave Radiometers). Variability of various hydro-meteorological parameters and
recent satellite based observation on flood and hydrological drought condition in selected regions over India isdiscussed.
