Abstract

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), approved by UN Summit in 2000, represent the first global development effort to provide a better future for the millions of poor citizens, with clear goals and a time frame. Four of the MDG goals pertain to health and nutrition; they are: eradication of extreme poverty and hunger; reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis; India’s progress towards targets which pertain to health and nutrition goals are discussed in this article. The progress towards MDG is being monitored by the UN statistical system. India is a signatory to the Millennium Declaration and the progress towards MDGs has been monitored through
the national statistical system.
